Politics Section
The term "politics" refers to contests among persons, political parties, media, think tanks, and multiple other organizations to define the best and most appropriate beliefs, ideas, strategies and policies which should prevail in the public context. Our time has been characterized by "cultural wars" where differing beliefs and values and the persons who hold them are referred to as good or evil, which has made politics a particularly nasty acivity. We believe it is important to think carefully, honestly, and sincerely about these matters, but finally it is necessary to have courage to jump into the fray and become involved, a posture which can be called "critical engagement." This means to think, decide, and act, and then learn from the action, think again, decide again, and act again. And this must be done in solidarity with others, thinking and deciding and acting together. The terms liberal and conservative have become labels for these cultural wars, but the actual meanings of these terms are often less than useful for clear understandings of the issues facing the country and the world. The election of Barack Obama in 2008 represents a shift in the public consciousness away from mean-spirited attitudes and toward more rational discussion of policy options. Whether he can be successful in this remains to be seen. The events of September 11, 2001, fundamentally changed the public context of life as we begin the 21st century. How we "see" what is happening around us determines how we think and feel, how we preach and teach, how we decide what is right and wrong, good and bad. So, "reading" the public context is the focus of this section. At this website we want to enter the debate but we want to do so with careful use of political terms. We seek to speak in ways that reflect what is truly right, real, and good, promoting public responsibility. We want to contribute to defining what it means to be a "religious progressive" in today's political culture. Some Helpful Political Links
